A Peep into Higher Education

11.30.06 (10:22 pm)   [edit]

It snowed today! It never snows in November around here! :-D My sister's school was cancelled-- Texas folk freak out when they see a snow flake. It wasn't as bad as the news people make it out to be. I slid a bit on the way to class, but nothing serious. I did witness an accident though-- girl was trying to turn into campus, slid sideways and the car behind t-boned her.

I took my little sis to class with me today since her classes were cancelled. One of my classes was cancelled as well so she only sat through an hour and fifteen minutes on reptiles in zoology. She said she enjoyed the class. It was my idea to take her to class. When I was looking at colleges, the whole atmosphere of college scared me to death until I toured my current university at which we were allowed to sit in on a class if we wanted to. After sitting through the class, I knew that college wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it was and that just maybe I'd make it and have some fun too. I asked the sis to come along for the same purpose-- to show her college is fun learning. I think every high school student should be given the chance to sit through a college class, or maybe even sign up for one at a community college or something prior to graduation and get dual credit back in high school too. I think we'd have more people in college if high schoolers were given a peep into the world of higher education.

That's it for now really. I'm almost ready to go into business on eBay! I'll post a link to a list of my auctions when I get them all listed. Until then, you can still donate to my study abroad trip to Spain with the button below and on the right panel.

Immersion Experience

11.28.06 (4:20 pm)   [edit]

Here we have it folks: the long awaited donation button from PayPal. Recall that I recently discovered that I will be studying Spanish abroad in Spain this coming summer instead of the next summer; therefore, I haven't gathered all the funds I need to even make the base line cost of the trip much less such "optional" features as food and books for the classes I'll be taking. So any bit will be of help! I'll also keep a cute little button on the side bar from now until my trip in case you're feeling generous or particularly like whatever I have to say around here. I ask you to consider one thing: what foreign language education is complete without an immersion experience?

Please keep in mind that unless your donation is over 33 cents, I will get nothing. PayPal rules. lol.

My New Best Friend-- My Jeans

11.23.06 (10:30 am)   [edit]

I just wanted everyone to know that I have a new best friend in Gap's curvy flare jeans. I must have tried at least 2 dozen pair of jeans yesterday and these are the ONLY ones that fit me because I have a little waist and a "honkytonk badonkadonk" aka big booty. If you have the same problem-- jeans fit in the waist but too small in hips or fit in hips but too big in waist-- then give these a try! They are simply amazing! They are also available in boot cut, I just like the flares.

Work and more Work

11.21.06 (9:09 pm)   [edit]

Driving home from class today, I nearly ran over an elderly gentleman on a bike in the right hand lane of a major street in town. He was leasurly riding along and as a zoomed past I happened to glance at the t-shirt he was wearing. It read, "WORK SUCKS!" I thought that saying very appropriate for someone who was definatly of retirement age.

On a slightly different note, I've decided to go into business for myself. I'm going to sell stuff on ebay. I'm going to start with selling some of my own stuff, mainly old textbooks and a few odds and ends then move onto selling bargains I happen to run across. I'm thinking interesting things I pick up at garage sales. I love garage sale-ing-- if that's a word. Might as well put those early hours on Saturday mornings to use. My mom loves to go too, so when I'm away with tennis I can put her to gathering objects for me. Any ideas as to what sort of garage sale item I should specialize in? I'm sure ebay doesn't need another "knick knack" store. I need something interesting.

Struggle Update

11.14.06 (5:12 pm)   [edit]

Just thought you guys might like to know that I'm not going to drop the history class. I talked with the prof today and I have better understanding now of why I'm not making the grades I want in there. Just got to get down and dirty with it for this test.

Also, I've decided to go ahead and go to Spain this summer. I'm really scared; I'm skipping the sophmore level Spanish courses and taking one junior and one senior level course during the trip. That will definatly need some prayer in the month of July. My trip period will need prayer.

Since I've decided to go to Spain I need to come up with the funds to go. I wasn't planning for going for another year, so... yeah. I'm about $1,000 shy of the base cost, plus spending money, so I'd say... a nice chunk of money. I've brain stormed on possible solutions to said problem and here's what I've got so far: 1) go back to work at old job over Christmas holidays (check: boss called this afternoon and offered it to me; where God sends He provides!) 2) ask for little else than funds for Christmas (check ... sort of: need to send out a mass bulletin to all the relatives) and 3) give tennis lessons over break (check... mostly: currently in the works; all I need now are students lol). If anyone has any further ideas, just shoot those out! I told my dad I'd sit under a bridge with a sign reading, "Hungry (for education) War vet (tennis and GPA contests) Will play tennis for cash. God bless!" He said that I'd probably be ran over, but who could resist that sign, tell me?!

"I struggle with forward motion."

11.10.06 (1:56 pm)   [edit]

Hello, my name is Bria and "I struggle with forward motion."(--Relient K)

The plans I had made for the next few years of my academic career have been turned on their head the past two days.

My stupid freshman history class could quite possibly put my GPA in the toliet. I think I can still redeem myself on the final if I do really well... like get an A, which is practically impossible I've decided on. (He's one of those profs that a certain number of students get As, Bs, etc. and since I'm not a stand out in history, I'm really worried.) I'm going to talk to the prof on Monday and if he doesn't think I have a chance then I'm dropping the class.

I officially declared myself a Spanish minor today. That was scary enough, but in talking with the advisor I discovered that they only take study abroad groups to Spain on even number years; therefore, won't be going in 2007 like I was planning, so I have to go this summer or not at all. AND I have to have a decision in two weeks. I've had a bit of a stomach ache all day due to that dizzying bit of news.

I had planned on taking a Trig course over Christmas break, but the junior college in town that I was planning on taking it from doesn't appear to be offering it this year online-- as I was planning to take it-- or on campus.

Why do I keep making such final plans that have to work just right, otherwise everything will fall apart? You'd think I'd eventually learn that my life is run on God's time table and not mine. Maybe I'll remember next time I go into a frenzy of planning.

Splendid Fear

11.08.06 (10:56 pm)   [edit]

Splendid Fear

If I had wings
What a dandy life I'd lead.
Soar amongst the clouds;
Take off on a whim.
Not a care
Except for an occasional rain or downdraft
Which pose souly for more adventure!

I envy those lords of the air
Turning acrobatics all the day long.
Why do some sport wings
Yet neither soar nor flap nor float nor glide,
Content to stay on ground
With the tools for splendor at their side?
Perhaps I too have wings
And am yet afraid to fly.

The New Domestic Diva

11.05.06 (11:49 pm)   [edit]

Yes, that would be me: the new domestic diva. Ok, maybe not; however, I have conquered the kitchen and hostessing thing! *BWAHAHAHAHA*

On Saturday evening, I invited several friends plus Greg over for dinner. Now, this doesn't sound like much, but I cooked the meal all by myself for the first time. *big grin* AND I didn't burn the house down! woo-hoo! I had a lovely Italian casserole with a tossed salad, creamcheese garlic rolls and black cherry tea. It really wasn't half bad, it I do say so myself. The entree was only slightly warm when we finally sat down to eat, and it needed some more spices, but other than that I think the whole affair was marvelous. Except my grandma says I needed to shut the curtains in the dining room that faces the street, but you know, I wanted to show off to whoever might drive by the fact that I, of all people, was hosting a get together.

The reasons I decided to do put it all together are multiple. First of all, I had to prove to myself that I could host a party in my own house. I also had to prove that fact to the matriachs of my family who view hostessing as a most necessary skill for the women in my family. I had to prove to myself that I could indeed follow a recipe well enough to make something that tastes pretty good and doesn't kill anyone. (I really didn't want my first experience alone in the kitchen to be with that poor soul that gets stuck with me for a wife.) So, all in all, I feel much more accomplished in useful skills now. Hooray!

I had to brag on myself for a moment. hehe :-D
