Happy Tuna!

10.31.06 (9:17 pm)   [edit]

I went Trick-or-Treating for canned goods to benefit the local food bank with my service club this evening admist many ghouls and goblins. Most of the people glared at we big kids until they realized we didn't want to steal the candy from the kids; Most were willing to help out too. At one house, as cans of asparagus, refried beans and the like were dumped into our sack, a "real" Trick-or-Treater walked up to the door and upon seeing a can drop in our sack squealed excitedly, "OOOOO!! TUNA!!!"

A little Halloween humor. Happy Halloween!

Question on Halloween...

10.30.06 (10:43 pm)   [edit]

Why is Halloween an acceptable excuse to dress like a prostitute?

Your opinion is not only welcome but highly desired.

Oh, the woes of the blogosphere

I became really excited when I logged into tBlog to find 126 new comments awaiting me. My joy was instantly thrashed when I discovered they were all trashy advertisements. Here's to deleting 126 comments one by one. *gag*

Blessed by Mozart

10.18.06 (1:59 pm)   [edit]

I am amazingly blessed. My ears were among the first to hear a never before played Mozart fragment and completetion by Dr. Murl Sickbert last night. Laughing It just makes me smile all over. The piece was a credo. It is assumed that Mozart quit work on this piece because he felt that in the end it would be too long for use in a church service, as was it's original intent.

I don't know much about music or Mozart so any fans or knowledgable persons please feel free to fill in the gaps!

Observations and Ponderings

10.16.06 (10:07 pm)   [edit]

A few recent observances of my world:

1. You know you're a hick when you're over 30 and still proudly wear your high school letter jacket. (Witnessed this today at a band concert... where the cool over 30 crowd hangs out on week nights.)

2. Americans are incredibly lazy, myself included.

--All the commuters that attend my division three university are up in arms because a few ongoing construction projects on campus are taking up commuter spots and so we commuters have to park on the outskirts of campus and walk in. Boo-hoo! A pedestrian can walk anywhere on my campus within 10 minutes, 15 if you stop to talk to a person or two.

--I've noticed some rather unusual modes of transportation crop up here lately including but not limited to: a motorized Igloo ice chest and a bicycle which has been modified to run on an engine, yet still has the pedals attached "in case of emergency". I've also seen a unicycle, but that person isn't lazy at all.

--A recent engineering contest across the country for high school kids was to design a machine to do the transfering of laundry between the washer and dryer and to fold the laundry.

--Young, healthy students at my university repeatedly choose the elevator over the stairs.

--I rarely do my hair or put any make-up on before class because "I value my sleep." aka: I'm too lazy to get up and do it.

3. You shouldn't give yourself a week off; the world doesn't stop and it will force you catch up with it.

4. There are people I've known my whole life and never spoken to.

5. The only way I will ever be able to throw out my current wardrobe and fill a new one with items I truly love to wear would be if I started wearing trashbags and was nominated for TLC's What Not to Wear. Hmmm... what color bag shall I wear tomorrow?

6. The pool chlorine from my water aerobics class is starting to mess with my hair. Anyone have a spectacular conditioner suggestion?

7. Speaking of classes, all my semester projects are looming too close for comfort. This is not the best feeling in the world-- a feeling of impending doom/due dates.

8. I'm REALLY tired of having 8 a.m. classes and going to chapel. However, I do appreciate the fact that the staff is actually putting effort into chapel this year and keep a running tally on the computer of our chapel credits. Speaking of, I'm missing a really awesome Thursday chapel this week-- student led worship. Last one I attended like that was amazing. Back to the first setence there, I'm just plain tired of class.

9. Why is it pedestrians at universities look both ways and then step out in front of cars anyway, bringing traffic to a screeching halt? Why not just step out and not bother looking since the cars they see coming obviously have no impact on their decision to walk or not to walk anyway.?

10. The only reason I listed a tenth one is because I wanted to end on an even number. What are the draws of even numbers? Why are the so desirable?

What to do? That is the question.

What's a girl to do?

I have recently taken stock of my friends and found I have no close friend(s) to speak of.

I hang out with the tennis team most of the year the most out of necessity. (I have to practice and have to go to tournies. I suppose I don't have to, we are thrown together, we'll say.) I like them all well enough, but it hurts me that they rarely invite me out on non-tennis outings. I know why they don't; most of them enjoy the party scene. The majority aren't heavy partiers, but I suppose they think that I would feel uncomfortable at a party. They are correct, but I could at least stay and enjoy myself until everyone is really gone. Drunks are pretty funny, I must say.

The people that I truly enjoy hanging out with are all in a sorority, and so have little time between this even and that to have much to do with non-social Greek me.

The only person left... I love her to death, but I hate to start a terrific friendship with her now. She's graduating not this coming May but the one after that. Actually, most of my friends will be graduating then, because they all came in with extra hours from AP, and dual credit or had already taken several classes at a community college before they graduated. Smart cookies! I wish I had thought of that last one! I didn't do much that was academically challenging my senior year of high school; I could have handled one class a semester anyway.

But yes, what to do?

A Tearful Prayer Request

10.01.06 (10:48 pm)   [edit]

I bring this prayer request to my miniscule internet audience with tears and regret.

Three guys that went to my high school-- two that I graduated with-- were in a fatal car accident early this morning. According to witnesses, the truck they were in flipped several times as they were exiting a highway and then hit a tree killing one instantly with another following the first to Glory an hour later. The one I knew the best was the driver, lived and is still in critical care; from what I've heard, he's in bad shape although expected to make it. Alcohol is suspected to be involved by the police, and that's what I heard from the people that were partying with them.

Say a prayer for these families and the community as we all hurt. One of the deceased was the cousin of one of the guys on my current tennis team and the brother of a guy on my high school team. Keep that family especially lifted in prayer; the cousin I know isn't taking it well at all and I'm sure the rest aren't either.

Such beautiful young lives cut short by the dangers of excessive alcohol. Those crumpled cars on the "don't drink and drive" billboards mean a little more to me now.
